TOWARDS THE END OF THE PUTIN REGIME

With the invasion of Ukraine, Putin will now be seen and treated as the greatest near-term threat to peace the world faces. Putin’s opponents in Russia will be empowered. Russia’s democracy movement will be energized. His oligarch friends will pay a high price with Western sanctions and they will come to resent their association with Putin. The Russian economy, will also suffer if those sanctions are maintained and deepened

PUTIN’S MISCALCULATION

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is tragic and shocking. It constitutes an unprovoked attack against a sovereign nation. In revealing the aggressive and expansive ambitions of President Vladimir Putin, this invasion will likely bring about the return of a Europe afflicted by militarized division. Now that Putin has begun the attack, he is likely to proceed with an effort to topple Volodymyr Zelensky’s government and install a puppet regime in Kyiv under the thumb of Moscow.

STATEMENT OF THE RUSSIAN COMMUNITY OF INDEPENDENT MEDIA OUTLETS

Russian journalists oppose the war declared to Ukraine by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Today, Russian President Vladimir Putin started a war with Ukraine. Pain, anger and shame are three words that reflect our attitude to what is happening. This adventure will bring grief to the families of thousands of people both in Ukraine and in Russia. This adventure is fraught with a big war, in which other states will be involved. Since the Cuban Missile Crisis, the world has never been so close to a global catastrophe.

ANTI-WAR PETITION FROM RUSSIAN MEDIA CORRESPONDENTS AND EXPERTS

An anti-war petition launched by Kommersant business daily reporter Elena Chernenko has collected at least 100 journalists' signatures. The signatories include employees of outlets including RBC, Novaya Gazeta, Dozhd, Ekho Moskvy, Snob and The Bell, as well as state-run media TASS and RT.

We, Russian media correspondents and experts who write about Russia’s foreign policy, condemn the military operation launched by the Russian Federation in Ukraine. War has never been and never will be a method of resolving conflicts and there is no justification for it.

OPEN LETTER FROM RUSSIAN MUNICIPAL DEPUTIES

More than 150 municipal deputies from Russian cities signed an open letter condemning the deadly attack on Ukraine.

We, the deputies elected by the people , unreservedly condemn the attack of the Russian army on Ukraine. This is an unprecedented atrocity for which there is and cannot be any justification.

OPEN LETTER FROM RUSSIAN SCIENTISTS AND SCIENCE JOURNALISTS AGAINST THE WAR WITH UKRAINE

We, Russian scientists and scientific journalists, declare a strong protest against the hostilities launched by the armed forces of our country on the territory of Ukraine. This fatal step leads to huge human losses and undermines the foundations of the established system of international security. The responsibility for unleashing a new war in Europe lies entirely with Russia. There is no rational justification for this war. Attempts to use the situation in Donbass as a pretext for launching a military operation do not inspire any confidence. It is clear that Ukraine does not pose a threat

TROLLING AND TROLL POWER

Trolling defined as ‘to antagonize (others) online by deliberately posting inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive comments or other disruptive content’ has gone viral in the real world. In geopolitics, troll power is increasingly augmenting the two traditional forms of power, hard and soft power.

Troll power is a form of negative soft power, one that imports the slashing mockery and grandstanding rhetorical gamesmanship seen in Twitter feuds into interactions between states and world leaders.

RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION AND PROPAGANDA TACTICS

In any analysis of Russia’s disinformation and propaganda tactics, it is important to note there are multiple terms and concepts that have been used to describe the nature of this threat. “Information Confrontation” is the term used in Russian strategic and military circles to describe their approach to the use of information in both peacetime and conflict. There is also a rich public record of the use of “Active Measures” to describe long-standing Russian political warfare methods that utilize disinformation and propaganda as a core tool.

RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION ON UKRAINE

Russian military and intelligence entities are engaged in information confrontation targeting Ukraine.  These activities include the spread of disinformation and propaganda attempting to paint Ukraine and Ukrainian government officials as the aggressor in the Russia-Ukraine relationship.  Such measures are intended to influence Western countries into believing Ukraine’s behavior could provoke a global conflict and convince Russian citizens of the need for Russian military action in Ukraine.
