The United Nations General Assembly on 2 March approved a nonbinding resolution condemning Russia for invading Ukraine and demanding that it withdraw its military forces.The resolution passed overwhelmingly by a vote of 141.

The daily life of ordinary Russians not just the country’s political elite or super rich oligarchs will be affected. All in all, this amounts to a grim scenario for Russian consumers and businesses. The economy is likely to plunge into recession. The new sanctions will severely impact the living standard of ordinary Russians. No matter how much money Russians have, they cannot transfer it abroad, they cannot get it out of their bank, and there’s nowhere to invest. The longer it goes, the more difficult it will become.

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and other members of the Council of Europe’s Platform to Promote the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists have published a joint statement calling for the protection of journalists covering Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and for the provision of urgent and practical assistance to reporters on the ground.

1. Russia is diplomatically isolated and its international reputation is smeared.
2. Putin’s war has exposed the Russian nation to potentially crippling economic warfare. Sanctions and countersanctions will hurt everyone. They will hit Russia harder and damage it more deeply. If the sanctions regime is robust, unified, and lengthy, Russia will not be able to escape this economic noose.
