DEALING WITH VICTOR ORBAN

Increasingly the war in Ukraine has left Victor Orban isolated in Europe. Orban, as the EU's longest-serving current head of government, has become one of the heroes of the populist far right across the world. Erstwhile European partners have condemned Orban's reluctance to take action against Russia or even critizise Russian aggression in Ukraine. He did reluctantly go along with EU sanctions on Russia, but refused to extend them to Russian oil and gas. Orban has also declared that Hungary would pay for Russian gas in rubles, as Putin has demanded.

A POLISH-CZECH-SLOVAK TRIANGLE

The war in Ukraine has caused major political repercussions in Central Europe, with relations in the Visegrad Group (V4) turned upside down. Poland’s relationship with Hungary has turned frosty, while never before has it been as close to the Czech Republic and Slovakia. .

EU COMMON GAS SAVING PLAN

The European Commission proposed that the 27 EU member states each cut their gas use by 15% from August 2022 to March 2023. The target would be voluntary, but the Commission could make it binding in a gas supply emergency. The main goal is saving 45 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas needed to weather a colder-than-average winter in case deliveries from Russia's Gazprom cease.
